How the Iron Butt Association SA Works

IBA South Africa recognise the preference of some riders to have their certificates and goodies branded as Mile based. Thus we provide that specifically for Harley Davidson Clubs, Groups and Individuals. However that will be done on special request BEFORE the rides. This will enable us to get the correct goodies in advance.

The following KILOMETER based Rides are recognized in South Africa.

BEFORE You attempt a GOLD or EXTREME Ride you MUST first complete a SaddleSore or BunBurner.

SaddleSore1600K:

The minimum MAP distance is 1610km in 24 hours

SaddleSore2000K minimum MAP distance is 2000km in 24 hours

BunBurner2500K minimum MAP distance is 2500km in 36 hours

BunBurnerGold2500K minimum MAP distance is 24 hours

GOLD
BunBurner3000K = 3000km minimum MAP distance in 48 hours

SaddleSore3000K = 3000km minimum MAP distance in 36 hours

SaddleSore4000K = 4000km in less than 60 hours Classified as EXTREME!

Around South Africa GOLD = ~7000km in Less than 100 hours. Classified as EXTREME!

4 Corners of South Africa GOLD = +4000km MAP Distance in less than 48 hours. Classified as EXTREME!

4 Corners of South Africa in 60 hours.

Please Note:
The four corners of South Africa are defined as: Agulhas Lighthouse, Alexander Bay Border Post (between RSA & Namibia) , Pontdrift Border Post (between RSA and Botswana), Kosi Bay Border Post (between RSA & Mozambique) you are NOT allowed to take a shortcut through Swaziland.

The rules for the 4 Corners are:
1. You MUST use BubblerGPS and Spotwalla. Mark and take a photo of your bike (and yourself) in BubblerGPS at each corner to prove that you were there,
2. It must be completed in less than 60 hours contiguous.
3. The points may be visited in any order though you don't have to end where you started.
4. You have to get 2 witnesses at the Start and End locations respectively.
5. Seeing that there are no fuel stations near any of these points you must fill-up at the closest possible fuel station when going "In" and "Out"
6. A critical note: As the shortest distance is less than 4000km you must deviate (provable) that your route was at least 4000km MAP DISTANCE!!!

A SUGGESTION: Submit your route to IBA South Africa for comments BEFORE the ride.

Currently the following two KILOMETER based rides are only available in South Africa.

Dusty Butt1600K = +1610km all OFF-Road within 24 hours EXTREME!!

Dusty Butt2000K = +2500km all OFF-Road within 36 hours EXTREME!!

There are also various Multiple Certifications eg: SS1600 Back-to-Back minimum distance 3200km in 48 hours with EACH one of the SS1600 done in 24 hours.

If you want to do a ride and are unsure about anything then contact Hendrik Bosman as indicated above.

4 Seasons Certification is achieved once 4 individual SS1600K were done on each of the 4 Seasonal Celestial Events known as the Equinoxes & the Solstices. It does not have to be done in the same year. However each certification must have the time of the occurrence of these celestial events during your ride.

NEW Certifications added for the REAL Ironbutts !!! 🙂
